Who is Severus Snape?

When the Harry Potter saga begins, Professor Severus Snape is the head of Slytherin house and potions professor at the Hogwarts School of Magic. When he was a boy, he became friends with Lily Evans (Lily Potter) the girl who would become the mother of Harry Potter. He immediately fell in love with her. When they later were both invited to attend Hogwarts, they were placed in rival houses. The different ideologies of the houses put their friendship under a lot of stress and when Lily became the girlfriend of James Potter, the frustration pushed Snape more and more to the dark side of magic. He became a Death Eater but changed side after Lord Voldemort murdered Lily Potter. He then devoted the rest of his life to protecting Harry Potter, Lily's son, in secret. This eventually got him killed. Nevertheless, he made crucial contributions to the effort to destroy Lord Voldemort.
