LEGO® Technic Gears for Mechanical Builds
Technic gears are used wherever rotational movement needs to be transmitted or controlled. By combining different gear sizes and types, builders can create drivetrains, steering systems, winches, cranes, gearboxes and other functional mechanisms.
- Transfer Rotation: Move power from a motor, crank or axle through a mechanical assembly.
- Change Speed & Torque: Use gear ratios to trade rotational speed for additional torque, or increase speed where required.
- Redirect Movement: Bevel and angled gear arrangements can transfer rotation between different axes.
- Create Functional Mechanisms: Build steering systems, differentials, winches, lifts and multi-stage gearboxes.
Types of LEGO® Technic Gears
Different Technic gear designs are suited to different mechanical jobs:
- Spur Gears: Standard gears used on parallel axles for general gear ratios and drivetrain systems.
- Bevel Gears: Designed to transfer rotation between angled shafts, commonly at 90 degrees.
- Worm Gears: Useful for compact high-reduction mechanisms where low speed and increased torque are needed.
- Rack Gears: Convert rotational movement into linear motion for steering racks, sliders and lifting mechanisms.
- Differential Gears: Allow driven wheels or outputs to rotate at different speeds while remaining connected to the same drivetrain.
Build Gear Trains & Gearboxes
A Technic gear train uses two or more gears to transfer rotation between axles. Changing the relative size of the driving and driven gears changes the output speed and torque.
More complex gearboxes can combine multiple gear stages to create different ratios, redirect rotation or control several mechanical functions within the same build.
Support Gears with Axles, Beams & Connectors
Technic gears work as part of a wider mechanical system. Mount them on LEGO® axles and support those axles within Technic beams and liftarms or Technic bricks to maintain accurate spacing and alignment.
Use Technic pins and connectors to secure surrounding structures and create rigid gearbox housings, chassis and mechanical assemblies.

Choosing the Right Technic Gear
The best gear depends on the direction of movement, available space and the speed or torque required by the mechanism. Small gears are useful for compact assemblies and higher rotational speeds, while larger gears can help increase torque and create wider gear ratios.
For angled drivetrains, bevel gears are often the best choice. Worm gears are useful for high-reduction systems, while rack gears are suited to mechanisms that need linear rather than rotational movement.
